The Trend—Statement Sweaters

By Gilmarie Brioso on March 18, 2013

It is the last week of winter, but do not let that little fact fool you. The next few days in New York City will be very chilly, with the temperature dropping to at least the 30′s. But don’t fret sunshine lovers, that is great news for the fashionistas of The New School! It gives all those with a fashion forward mind a chance to wear the latest trend: Statement Sweaters.

This trend has been seen on many of the Spring 13 runways. Just take a look at the fabulous Porcelain Neoprene Sweatshirt in the Prabal Gurung Spring 2013 show.

Jessica Baker, a writer for Who What Wear, also suggests the statement sweater. She states that the piece’s “intriguing or unexpected details— like color blocking, lace overlays, or cheeky embellishments” is what makes this look hot. These quirky elements transform what can be a simple piece into a statement maker.

Statement sweaters are great for the upcoming cold and dreary days and they go with almost anything. You can wear these sweaters with tight skinny jeans and sexy high heels or sleek fitted shorts. But if you go with the latter option, do not forget the tights! It’s cold out there! You do not have to freeze to be among the fashion friendly.

Another tip: I like to wear statement sweaters over my summer dresses. This allows me to get some extra usage out of items I normally would not be able to wear during the winter season.

And boys, I did not forget about you. Men can rock statement sweaters too! Statement sweaters for men are all about bright, bold colors and geometric shapes.

Don’t forget to pop those collars. Popped collars are making a major comeback.
