No Shave November Begins

By Asia Kang on November 8, 2012

No Shave November, or Movember, is an annual event that spans the month of November in which men do not shave the whole month and grow out their beards to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other cancers specific to males. Women can also be a part of this by not shaving their armpits or legs. Movember started out in Australia as the Movember Foundation charity and quickly became popular in other countries around the globe, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, South Africa, etc. In its sixth year being recognized in the States, it is quickly gaining wide popularity throughout the country. It’s a kind of counterpart to the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month as held annually in October.

Though the event was created for a good cause, the goal of the event has been slightly skewed. It’s also used as a competition of which men are the manliest and can go a month without shaving their mustaches. The goal is to look as rugged and manly as possible. It’s basically a celebration of masculinity.

However, this event has its rules. The rules are as such;

  1. Once registered at each mo bro must begin the 1st of Movember with a clean shaven face.
  2. For the entire month of November each mo bro must grow and groom a moustache.
  3. There is to be no joining of the mo to your sideburns. (That’s considered a beard.)
  4. There is to be no joining of the handlebars to your chin. (That’s considered a goatee.)
  5. Each mo bro must conduct himself like a true country gentleman.

As a big fan of Ron Swanson’s legendary stache of Parks and Recreation, it’s an event that celebrates manliness (since we have a whole month for ourselves during Breast Cancer Awareness Month) and also raise funds and awareness for men with prostate or testicular cancer. So if you and/or your guy friends aren’t aware of this, let everyone know and have them join in as well.
