As a college student, your living space is likely small. Even if you live in an apartment, you probably share it with roommates or it is a smaller apartment. This resonates with your bedroom. You may opt to make use of storage space under your bed, which is especially useful if your dorm or apartment bed sits higher to allow for storage. However, there are still some things that you should avoid keeping under your bed for a variety of reasons.

Things you use regularly

Storing things under your bed that you use on a regular basis only adds more hassle to your life. These things include clothes that are in-season, this season’s décor, or even headphones. It is best to use the space under your bed for things you do not need to store things you will not need for a few months. Using the space for things you use regularly will become a hassle if you constantly have to pull out storage bins from under your bed. Instead, store things you use regularly in other places, such as your closet, dressers, or desk drawers so you can find them easily without going through the hassle of digging them out from under your bed.

Suitcases and luggage

As a college student, you probably rely on suitcases and other types of luggage to go between your home and your college living space. However, they are usually pretty bulky, so they take up a lot of space under your bed. Ideally, suitcases and other luggage should be stored in places other than under your bed, such as a closet or another room altogether. They tend to take up a lot of space, especially if you decide not to keep anything in them. Space under the bed needs to be optimized as much as possible, so if you intend on keeping your suitcases empty, store them elsewhere. Otherwise, they can be a great place to store things you will not need regularly but will at some point down the line.

Clothes not in storage containers

If you opt to put clothes for next season under your bed, make sure you have them in some kind of storage container, such as a vacuum-sealed container or a drawer cube. That way, your clothes will stay organized and you can pull them out easily. This will also allow you to easily switch clothes between seasons since you know exactly where to put them. Using a vacuum-sealed container will allow you to have even more space, especially if you are storing bulky clothes such as sweaters or jackets.

Heavy items

Even if you do not plan to store things you need on a regular basis under your bed, you should avoid storing things that are heavy under your bed. When you pull these items out, they are likely to scratch the floors if you are not careful, which can cause issues with your dorm or your landlord. If you try to pull these items out at night, they can make a lot of noise, which can disrupt those in other rooms, especially if you live on the upper floors. Heavy items can also cause injury when lifting them, especially when you forget how heavy they are.

Storage without wheels

Storage containers have the potential to scratch floors if they do not have wheels, no matter how heavy they are. When shopping for storage for under your bed, make it a point to only buy bins that have wheels. However, if you are not so lucky or you find a container that fits your room but does not have wheels, you can always add stick-on felt to the bottom of the containers to help protect your floors from potential damage. This will save you hassle when you move out of your dorm or apartment and may save you from having to pay to fix the damage.

Loose items

It can be challenging to figure out what to do with random items you only need every so often. You may be tempted to just throw them under your bed without placing them in any kind of container. This may seem like a good idea, but this will only make it easier to lose or misplace the items. Instead, buy bins and label them after you organize the contents. You may even opt to have a bin specifically for odds and ends for items that do not fit into any other category. That way, when you go to vacuum your floor, you do not have to worry about accidentally vacuuming up loose items and having them in bins will make it easier to pull out from under your bed for cleaning.
