5 Netflix Shows You Must Watch

By Ankita Upadhyay on December 31, 2015

Netflix and chill. Family classics, horror, lgbtq, romance, comedy – you name the genre and you’ll definitely find something to watch as you enjoy your downtime (or stress watching episode – see what I did there?) engaging in the all too popular “Netflix and chill” phenomenon.

1) Sherlock – If you ever want to retrieve the brain cells you lost by watching mind numbing shows like “Bob’s Burgers” or “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” this show is a savior. Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, is a modern day version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original story Sherlock Holmes and is honestly one of best shows out there. This show intertwines humor and intelligence and unintentionally leaves viewers attempting to mimic Sherlock’s deduction skills (if you have no idea what I’m talking about, go watch an episode right now and I promise you that you will start analyzing everything around you in a whole different way). Each episode is about an hour and a half long and each and every minute entails excitement and anticipation. Even if you’re not into mystery type shows, this will be a great watch and you will want to finish the whole series (yes, series, not seasons, as this is a British show) before embarking on anything else.

2) 90210 – Like Sherlock, 90210 is modern day version of an older show, Beverley Hills, 90210. With an attractive cast (no seriously, literally everyone on this show is gorgeous), beautiful California scenery, and unexpected plot twists, this show never fails to entertain. Most of this show is based on high school drama among rich, hormone infested teenagers but if you’re into drama, modern day issues (teen pregnancy, mental disorders, etc.), and a more ramped up, non-PG version of High School Musical, 90210 is a must watch. If all this sounds pretty stupid and you’re sick of high school dramas, you can literally just watch the shows for the outfits and different makeup/hairstyles – I mean this does take place near Hollywood.

3) Ally McBeal Ally McBeal is a completely different show than the previously listed recommendations, as it deals with lawyers, (sometimes erratic) court cases, and aired during the ‘90s/early 2000s. Ally McBeal chronicles the daily life of Ally McBeal, a zany, quirky lawyer who works alongside her estranged ex-lover (talk about awkward situations). Each of the lawyers at her firm have a distinct character and oddities. Casting firm drama aside, the show does broadcast a different court case everyday – many of which apply to Ally McBeal and her lawyer friends’ personal lives. This show touches on a variety of issues such as individuality, self-confidence and mainly, mental health. Although serious at times, Ally McBeal is definitely entertaining as well.

4) Friends – Ah, Friends, another ‘90s shows (it’s safe to say they had quality TV back then). If you haven’t heard of Friends, then boy, you have been missing out. Thankfully, all 10 seasons are available to stream on Netflix! Friends is about the lives of six friends in their 20s going about their lives in New York. It may seem like your typical, predictable show, but trust me, it’s definitely much more than that. The comedy, romance, and everyday struggles which are all too real, in the sense they apply to real-life people, make the show worth watching. If you’re ever down or just super bored and need a laugh, Friends is surely your go-to show.

5) Hart of Dixie – Quick synopsis: New York doctor moves to Bluebell, Alabama as the town doctor for a year to complete part of her medical program – except that she doesn’t stay for just a year. The doctor chooses this unfamiliar town because of a stranger who greeted her at her graduation – who happened to be her estranged father. Already sounds interesting doesn’t it? This show is all the more fun to watch because of the southern culture, southern accents, southern belle drama, and of course, the southern delicacies depicted in the show. Don’t be surprised if watching Hart of Dixie has you researching about southern society and all the interesting things that have to do with this part of America.

Hopefully this list will help when you just can’t find anything to watch on Netflix! Happy watching!
