90's Fashion Trends: A Comeback

By Ariel Preciado on August 8, 2013

The other day I was scoping out the shoe aisles of one of my favorite boutiques when I discovered a pair of platform Supergas. I took them off the shelf and tried them on, during this process I was thinking about the history of said shoe and that is when I realized our fashion trends today mirror those of the 90’s. In essence, we are currently experiencing a 90’s revival.

First, what is 90’s? Influenced by the music industry and Hollywood, the 90’s fashion can be broken down into three main categories: grunge, preppy, and hip-hop. Each are beginning to recycle into today’s trends but the category most widely seen on our campus is grunge. The grunge look during the 90’s consisted of baggy jeans and oversized or midriff revealing tops. It included Doc Martens, Birkenstocks and an increased popularity in tribal arm band tattoos as well as belly piercings. All of which are considered a staple up on campus. Who do we owe for introducing us to these staple items? Bands such as Nirvana and Oasis, and film media like Friends, Clueless, and 10 Things I Hate About You, all greatly contributed to this era’s unique appearance. The 90’s grunge look was a unique decade of combat boots, graphic tee’s, utility jackets, plaid and velvet apparel.

The grunge look has definitely made a debut on our campus, and a look at our very own UC Santa Cruz Street Style Tumblr blog is pure proof: the 90’s trends are back. One of the most noticeable fashion trends at UCSC  is the combat boot similar to Doc Martens, this boot is a combination between a fashion statement and comfort.  With hundreds of styles consisting of buckles, belts, zippers, straps, and laces, the combat boot is perfect for tackling that hike to class while also making those leggings you slept in look like you didn’t just roll out of bed before class.  Not only do our feet love the comfort of these boots, but I know my wallet is benefiting from numerous plaid button downs. The plaid shirt, literally perfect for any outfit, can dress down that Saturday night ensemble. Accompanied with a pair of combat boots and tights, that 45 dollar dress no longer makes you second guess your purchase and the shoes render it an ideal outfit to conquer a day on campus. Not a dress kind of girl? No problem! The plaid shirt still looks flawless with just about every outfit, jeans, shorts, leggings, you name it. Paired with an oversized knit or floral top, the outfit pays tribute to its 90’s origins.

The 90’s grunge vibe is a unique style that is making its appearance here in Santa Cruz, do you think the 90’s should make an official comeback or should it stay in the past?
