How To Prepare For Your College Exams (Fashion Edition)

By Amanda Cohen on July 24, 2016

Summer is still here; however, soon enough most of us will be ringing in the new school year. College is a time of great change, exciting events, new friends, and hard work. Unlike high school, most of your college courses will make your grade entirely based off of one or two big exams.

I know it may seem silly, but when I take an exam I like to plan out my outfits accordingly, and I have also noticed that my friends do the same. There is no right or wrong way to dress for an exam, but I do have a few suggestions for all different types of exams. Read on if you want to learn how to dress for success!

It’s 5 o’clock in the Morning

Some college professors will schedule their exams at the crack of dawn. You may think that it’s best to just roll out of bed and wear your pajamas to the early morning exams, but trust me it’s not. Since you will probably want to still be asleep at the time of this exam, you should wear an outfit that is cute, but still comfortable.

For example, you could wear stretchy jeans and a comfy sweater (with a tank-top underneath just in case you get hot). Or, if you hate jeans, wear a cute pair of leggings or flowy shorts! You don’t want to go into an early morning exam while being half asleep, so wake up with enough time to shower and to put on makeup or maybe even do your hair!

Midnight Madness

College professors don’t consider the fact that after a long day you will probably want to lay your head on your pillow on the earlier side, which is why they will schedule an exam for the later hours of the evening. You may think that you should wear the same outfit that you would for your morning exam, but that’s not the case.

Nighttime is a time of comfort and relaxation, but you can’t relax so you have to compensate with comfort. I’m not telling you to wear your baggiest sweatpants, but don’t wear jeans either. Nothing makes you feel more prepared for a nighttime exam than a comfortable pair of joggers, a tight camisole (or long sleeve depending on the weather), and a cardigan. This is the perfect way to get your pajama fix without wearing your actual pajamas.

The Most Random Time of the Day

There is honestly nothing worse than having an exam at some random time during the day. It impedes on your usual schedule and you never know how to shape your class schedule, your workout schedule, or your eating schedule around it. For this sort of exam, I recommend wearing workout clothes.

Workout clothes are comfortable, but also super cute. You will be able to look presentable in the earlier half of the day prior to the exam and you won’t have to worry about going back to your dorm room to change. If you have classes after the exam or if you want to work out after, you will already be ready to do so, so you won’t have to waste any time!

No matter what, you never want to roll out of bed looking like you had to rush to your exam. You want to always feel presentable and embrace the “look good, feel good, do good” mentality. However, even though dressing for success should definitely be a part of the equation, there is nothing more important than studying and getting a good night’s sleep and eating a good meal before a big exam.

There are also some other factors to consider when dressing for an exam. If the exam is going to be really long and/or have short answer questions, definitely go for the cute and comfortable look. If the exam is shorter and/or is multiple choice, dress up a little more to keep your mind sharp. Looking at the Scantron sheet can give you a headache and almost hypnotize you, so it’s important to keep sharp by looking sharp.

So, ladies and gentleman, look in your closet and make sure that you have a substantial amount of proper test-taking clothing! If you don’t, maybe ask for a pre-college gift and shop at your favorite stores and/or the stores that I listed above. Wherever your college experience may take you, I with you the best of luck and I hope that these tips will help you in all of your exam-taking endeavors!
