Workout Tips for Lazy People

Working out is tough, it’ even tougher when you don’t even want to get off the couch, let alone sweat it out in a gym while your muscles scream in agony. We all know that a regular workout is good for us, but that doesn’t make it any easier to actually get up and do the work! Just because it is easier to find the motivation to watch TV than it is to get inspired to get to the gym, doesn’t mean that there isn’t exercise-oriented motivation out there! Here are a few tips and tricks that I use to get myself off the couch and into shape:

Tip #1:  The Buddy System

Start working out with a friend or two instead of hitting the gym alone! Going with a friend will keep you more accountable for your workout. If you are meeting a friend to workout then you’ll feel more inclined to show up and not skip your workout, because bailing on a friend is never cool. Also, you can have friendly competition and encourage one another during the workout. It’s hard to get competitive when you are all by yourself.

BONUS: If your friend is already in pretty good shape, they can teach you new skills and exercises!

Tip #2: Explore Your Options

There are so many different ways to exercise! Some people are into soccer, others yoga, some people like muscle training, others prefer cardio. The point is: some types of exercise you may enjoy more than others, so don’t feel like you need to limit yourself to one way of working out, especially if you don’t enjoy that type of workout!

Colleges offer tons of classes in various forms of P.E., so you’re bound to find something that you actually like. The YMCA also offers numerous adult classes for people of all levels of fitness and experience to join. Maybe you’ll like belly-dancing or watering aerobics – don’t be afraid to try something new, there is a lot out there.

Tip #3: Goals

Having goals is another way to keep yourself motivated in your workouts. The key is to set a realistic goal. Setting goals that are too far-reaching can be more discouraging than motivating. Consider your fitness level, and really think about what you can do to improve it. Maybe you want to be able to keep up with someone in your dance class, so you should pace yourself off of that person. Perhaps you want to do two more reps in every set. Or maybe you want to take fewer breaths while swimming laps. Set a goal that is very specific to you and to your workout, that way you will know exactly what you need to do to improve. Also, by having such a specific goal, you will see which areas of your fitness are being improved.  Keep setting goals to encourage yourself to keep exercising!

While all of these tips are great for encouraging you in your workout, the power to improve really lies within you, so don’t put it off until tomorrow, take the first step and start today! Find your friends, find something that you are interested in, and get to the gym! You’ll be glad that you did.
