4 Fashion-Forward Hats for Fall

By Sarah Christine Davis on September 27, 2015

Whether you were lucky enough to visit the beach over the summer, or you just lived vicariously through your Facebook friends who posted pictures there, you probably saw a lot of floppy hats such as this one.

While hats are always great for shielding the hot sun from your sore eyes, hats for summer are not necessarily apt during the fall. In fact, hats are not typically a big fad during this season, aside from the occasional casual beanie to keep your head warm as the weather cools off.

However, New York Fashion Week suggested a change for this year with a huge emphasis on accessories, including hats.

So, if floppy beach hats are out, what kinds of hats are in this season? From the classic beanie to the more unique driving cap, you have a lot of options. Even if you don’t regularly wear hats, you’re sure to find a style that is fit for you.

Read on to find out more.

The Wool Beanie

This is a must-have during fall for not just its stylishness but also its function of warmth. It’s important to find a beanie that meets both of these criteria; you want a beanie that’s cute, but if it isn’t able keep you from freezing during your walk across campus to class, then what’s the point?

Depending on where you attend college, you may or may not be interested in a serious beanie. If you live where snowfall and frozen lakes are the norm as early as October, you may want to consider a beanie from Missoni.

This brand’s products are crafted with signature Italian wool and don’t forget the importance of a unique and stylish look. This beanie from the brand uses black and white marbled look and a contrasting red band for a unisex style. It’s a little pricey, but if you value both function and form, it’s worth it.

If you base your beanies more off of looking good, Forever 21 is always a great option. For only $6.90, this adorable bear-face beanie is sure to brighten your early mornings a little bit.

The Driving Cap

This fashion-forward look may make you say, “That’s cute, but I could never pull it off.”

Well, I’m here to tell you that you’re wrong. Paired with the right outfit and the huge amount of confidence that you deserve to have, you can totally make this cap work.

A more unique way to keep your head warm than a beanie, the driving cap fits in with the vintage trend that’s been happening recently. Many of the caps, including this one from Nordstrom, are available in a classic herringbone pattern, which works to enhance the popular old school look.

The driving cap is comparable to a more posh version of a baseball cap. It can be worn with casual outfits, but it offers a fusion of modern and classic styles that no other hat can match up to. If you’re up for the challenge, Nordstrom is a great place to find driving caps of various styles, colors and sizes.

The Wide-Brimmed Fedora

Though this is the technical name for this hat, I prefer the oxymoron “sturdy floppy hat.” Fedoras often have negative connotations (a blog entitled “Forever Alone Fedoras” calls fedora wearers “the worst offenders in fashion”), and this hat barely looks like a fedora because of the wide brim. More accurately, this hat resembles the summer floppy hat sans floppiness, making it the perfect transition accessory.

While this contemporary and chic hat may not be suitable for cooler weather, it is making headway in the world of fashion. It’s certainly appropriate for the early weeks of fall and it’s perfect if your college town isn’t afflicted by the perils of freezing temperatures.

This wide-brimmed fedora from Forever 21 stands out with its stylish studs and braiding as well as a pinched crown. Conversely, this black and simplistic fedora evokes an air of mystery.

The French Beret

According to Fashionisers.com, “some of the biggest fashion houses have opted for the most interesting of typically French designs.” This includes the French beret.

The perfect option for mornings when your hair just does not seem to be on your side (we’ve all been there), this type of headwear is your quick fix for looking stylish and sophisticated. Additionally, the French beret is embracing modern times. Gone are the days of the French beret being exclusively worn by the conservative and the stuffy.

From structured to studded designs, the beret is being offered in so many ways that there’s bound to be a beret to suit your specific style.

For us college students looking for a beret on a budget, stores such as Urban Outfitters and H&M offer classic berets in a variety of colors at a reasonable cost.
