6 Life-Ruining (In the Good Way) iOS Games

By Julia Dunn on April 22, 2015

iOS games are the perfect filler when you need to occupy yourself for some amount of time. And with only 24 hours in a day, don’t you want to spend your free time playing high-quality games?

As a true fan of iPhone games, I’ve selected my top six favorites for your gaming pleasure. And the best part? Five of the six are FREE!

“Give It Up!” costs 99 cents (unless you were given a free download of it from the Starbucks app, which is how I got the game).

1. Lots of Dots

Lots of Dots is one of those easy-but-hard-enough games you play when you’re waiting for someone. All you have to do is keep your little red dot away from the blue dots that fall from the top of the screen—if you run into one of the blue dots, the game is over.

Occasionally, a big red dot will fall down with the blue dots—touch this big red dot with your little red dot to make all the blue dots burst and disappear.

Otherwise, the blue dots will accumulate at the bottom. This is when things get difficult, because the more blue dots that fall without you bursting them, the less room you have to avoid the blue dots, because they will stack on top of each other. The jazzy background music makes this game a chill experience for all!

2. Jelly Jump

Jelly Jump seems easy at first glance, but be warned: timing is everything in Jelly Jump! All you have to do is click your screen to make your jelly cube jump. The object of the game is to jump past a platform formed with 2 boards that move towards each other from both sides of the screen, without being smashed in between them.

If you jump in time, you will land on each platform above you. You must continue jumping while keeping in mind the speed at which the platforms are coming together, or else your jelly will be squashed!

The coins you earn can buy you new jelly shapes, just for fun. See how many platforms you can cross!

3. Two Dots

After being introduced to Two Dots 15 minutes before turning 19, I became insanely hooked on this elegantly simple, adorable game. Two Dots gives you a number of challenges to complete involving colorful dots, bricks, fire, and ice in various environments.

In the first few levels, you just have to connect a certain number of colored dots to level up, but later on, other elements in the game can get in your way. Use careful strategy—and when in doubt, form as many squares as you can; for instance, if you make a square of red dots, every other red dot on the screen will disappear. This helps you win!

Complete your “daily quest” to receive supply crates with special powers to help you complete your level.

Two Dots is a perfect game to play in bed before you go to sleep—the beautifully designed scenes are calming, as is the music, which is my favorite part of the game! Truth be told, I found a YouTube video of the Two Dots music that I play on repeat while I study.

4. Aerox

I’ll admit, I stopped playing this game three months ago because I can’t seem to get past the 18th level—but this game is so fun. You have to tilt your phone to get a ball to roll through an elaborate obstacle course set up above an ocean, and roll all the way to the end where a glowing circle awaits.

Aerox is perfect for those who are more into video games than strategy games. It’s so exciting to master each obstacle course without falling off the edge into the ocean!

5. Crossy Road

The object of Crossy Road is to move your character across busy streets, train tracks, rivers, and other landscapes without being run over and killed by a vehicle. You can also die if you jump into the river without making it onto the floating logs which help you get across.

While it seems advantageous to wait by the side of the road for a 100 percent clear path across the road, an eagle will swoop down and carry you away if you stay idle for too long! Collect coins to buy new prizes and fun characters that accompany a variety of landscapes.

6. Give It Up!

I got Give It Up! two weeks ago, and have already played it 400 times (the game is nice enough to remind you of how little of a life you have). To level up, you must navigate a blob-shaped character across a path without running into barrels or landing on fiery stones.

To get past these, you must click the screen at just the right time, causing the blob to jump up. It helps to play with the game’s hilarious music on, because the beat in the song helps you know exactly when to click and jump—listen to the rhythm!

No one I’ve talked to about Give It Up! has any idea what the title refers to … but a more accurate title would be “Give Up Your Life,” because that’s what happens when you download this game!

**Disclaimer: If one or more of these games becomes your entire existence, which has been the case for my friends and I … don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Have fun!
