Start Setting New Quarter Goals

By Nicholas Neyhouse on December 8, 2014

As we wind down this quarter and finals are upon us I can’t seem to stop thinking about next quarter. I know I still have to finish a book, write two papers, and take a test, but I am ready for a fresh start and new set of classes. In order to make the best of my new quarter I plan to make new quarter goals instead of New Year’s resolutions. (And yes, if you were thinking it, I did get this idea from Ned’s Declassified, the ‘New Semester’ episode).

I think a lot of people make New Year’s resolutions, and the length of the year prevents them from sticking to and achieving their goals. A very long period of time causes people to make excuses to keep pushing back their goals. Although, setting a ten week period creates a more manageable length of time to accomplish goals, and forces the person to productively work on them.

In order to come up with the goals, I wish to enact for next quarter, I am forcing myself to pinpoint the parts of this quarter that I did not enjoy. Some parts of the quarter come out more disappointing then you’d like, and this seems to be a common occurrence for everyone. So ask yourself now, ‘what did you dislike about this quarter?’ Was it something about the classes you chose? Did you neglect your friends? Did you neglect your work? What caused you discomfort?

Finding out what really bothered you this quarter may cause difficulty in itself, although the more difficult part is always figuring out how to change those problems. Make sure that whatever you want to change is something that you have the ability to control. You only have control over your choices and actions, so don’t worry yourself with something you don’t have the authority of. If something bothered you this quarter that is someone else’s problem, then separate yourself from the negativity. Again you hold the power and responsibility to do what is best for you.

When actually setting out to accomplish your goals make them realistic. Don’t expect for yourself to accomplish the impossible. I suggest that you start organizing a list of goals you wish to accomplish and organize them in order of importance. Be specific with exactly how you will achieve these goals, and put some effort into a schedule.

Remember a few key things when entering the quarter. Firstly, you are human, and that means you will make mistakes and you will need time to actually see changes made. Don’t be discouraged if the quarter does not start out amazingly, and don’t give up. Secondly, remind yourself why you want to achieve these goals and keep the end image in your mind. Thirdly, don’t be afraid to give up parts of your life that continue to produce negativity, or to take on new things that will increase positivity. Good luck with finals, and good luck with your new quarter goals.
