Your Complete Holiday Party Guide

By Kristen Peuvion on December 1, 2014

Holiday season is already in progress, which means that time spent with the family is at an all-time high, the food is plentiful and most excitingly, there are countless holiday parties to attend!

With all of those parties, though, you are inevitably going to need something to wear. This can cause a lot of stress, but don’t worry about it this year! Whether it’s a family party or New Year’s Eve celebration, here’s your guide to party outfits that will get you through all of your holiday party needs.

For The Family Holiday Party

For a family party, you’re probably going to want to wear something a bit more conservative than something you would wear to a party with friends. After all, you don’t want Grandma making comments about your outfit all night. So stay away from super short hemlines, revealing tops and anything too trendy.

A good idea is to stick to the classics. Try a dress in a classic cut, but spice it up with a fun print; that way you get a good mix of old and new that will make you feel fashionable, but won’t have your family making snide comments behind your back.

Another idea is to try a midi skirt and blouse. Midi skirts are just what they sound like; they fall right between a short skirt and a maxi skirt, right around the middle of your calves. This type of skirt is conservative, but also really trendy right now. The trendiness keeps this outfit young so you’ll love it and so will everyone else!

Your Friend’s Holiday Party

The great thing about your friends is that they’ll be a lot less judgmental than your family. So don’t worry about pleasing them with your outfit choice. Your friend’s holiday party is the perfect time to let your inner fashionista out.

Go for something bold, or try out a new trend that you’ve been too scared to try otherwise. Try a leather skirt, or anything leather really. Just try something new and all of your friends are sure to be impressed with your cool, trendy fashion sense.

For Your New Year’s Eve Celebration

New Year’s Eve is the time to go all out with your party outfit. Forget keeping things conservative. Anything goes for your New Year’s party look.

A popular trend for New Year’s is anything sequined. This look is a lot of fun, and probably one of the few times you can get away with wearing a completely sequined outfit without looking tacky. And since this trend is so popular for New Year’s, you’ll have no problem finding a sequined dress.

If you’re a fan of sequins, but are sick of all of the dresses you see, put a different twist on the trend. Sequined pencil skirts are popular right now which is a great alternative. Try pairing it with a solid colored crop top or possibly find a matching top, like this matching set from H&M.

If sequins aren’t your thing, though, you can still have fun with your New Year’s outfit. Try a jumpsuit or romper instead of the classic dress.

These are a great alternative to a dress because they’re an entire outfit all in one, just like a dress, but you have the added comfort of wearing shorts or pants. So no more fidgeting with your hemline all night long.

A romper or jumpsuit on its own might not be enough drama for your liking, though, so how can you glam things up? No matter what outfit you decide on for the big day, try adding a faux fur vest or jacket over your outfit.

This faux fur will add instant drama and sexiness to whatever outfit you choose.

For An Ugly Sweater Party

Ugly sweater parties are definitely the easiest holiday party to dress for. After all, the name of the party tells you exactly what you need to wear, so there’s not that usual stress you have when you get invited to other holiday parties.

It seems a lot of times people try to make their ugly sweaters “cute” somehow, but where’s the fun in that? The uglier the sweater, the better! If you’re in a rush to find a sweater, check out your local thrift shops, Walmart or Ragstock. It might take a little searching, but it’ll be worth it once you have the perfect ugly holiday sweater.

If that fails, then you can always make your own ugly sweater. And hey, if you’re not all that crafty, don’t worry. Remember, you’re trying to go for ugly!

So don’t stress about all of the upcoming holiday parties; just use them as an excuse to shop for a new outfit. This guide will get you started on all of your holiday party outfit needs!
